This technique was created by Renato Casutt, a Swiss typographic designer. The concept is based on how the human visual system works โ the brain processes familiar words as complete units rather than letter by letter.
Research suggests that readers familiar with Bionic Reading can experience improved speed and comprehension, especially for people with dyslexia, ADHD, or anyone who struggles with concentration during long reading sessions.
The method is particularly effective for dense text such as academic papers, legal documents, technical manuals, and long-form journalism where maintaining focus over many pages is challenging.

What Is Bionic Reading?
Bionic Reading is a typographic reading method developed by Swiss designer Renato Casutt in 2022. The core idea is simple but effective: bold the first few letters of every word โ called the fixation point โ so your eyes and brain work together more efficiently. Instead of reading every letter in a word, your brain recognises the pattern from the bolded start and completes the word automatically.
The technique is inspired by how our visual system actually works. When you read fluent, familiar text, your brain does not process each letter individually. It uses contextual pattern recognition โ seeing the beginning of a word and instantly knowing the rest. Bionic Reading makes this process explicit by giving your eyes a clear starting anchor for every word.
Who Benefits From Bionic Reading?
Readers with ADHD
The visual anchors help maintain focus across a page, reducing the tendency to lose your place or re-read the same line.
Readers with Dyslexia
Bold fixation points reduce the visual complexity of each word, making it easier to distinguish letter shapes and process words accurately.
Speed Readers
Experienced readers use Bionic Reading to push their pace further by eliminating the cognitive load of processing every letter.
ESL / Second Language Readers
Non-native speakers can use fixation points as anchors for recognising unfamiliar words more efficiently.
Professionals Reading Dense Text
Lawyers, researchers, analysts and developers reading long technical documents benefit from reduced fatigue and better retention.
Students
Studying long textbook chapters, academic papers or lecture notes becomes less mentally taxing with visual reading guides.
How the Fixation Level Works
The fixation level controls the ratio of letters bolded in each word. At level 1, only the first letter or two are bolded โ a very subtle guide that leaves most of the word in normal weight. At level 3 (the recommended setting), approximately 40% of each word is bolded โ enough to anchor the eye without making the text feel heavy. At level 5, over 60% of each word is in bold, which works well for very dense or unfamiliar text.
Short words of 1โ3 characters always have only their first letter bolded regardless of level, since there is not enough room for a meaningful ratio split. Punctuation surrounding words is preserved exactly as in the original text.

Paste any article, document, email or long-form text. Use the quick samples or your own content.
Adjust Fixation Level
Choose how much of each word gets bolded โ from light (1โ2 letters) to strong (60%+ of each word). Level 3 is recommended for most readers.

What is Bionic Reading?
Bionic Reading is a reading method developed by Swiss typographic designer Renato Casutt. It works by bolding the first letters of each word โ called artificial fixation points โ so the brain can complete the whole word without processing every character individually. This lets your eyes move faster through text.
Does Bionic Reading actually make you read faster?
Results vary by person. Many readers report improved reading speed and focus, especially for dense or technical material. It is particularly reported to help readers with dyslexia, ADHD, or those who struggle to maintain focus during long reading sessions. The method has anecdotal support and growing interest in the accessibility community.
What is the fixation level?
The fixation level controls how much of each word is bolded. Level 1 bolds only the first letter or two โ very subtle. Level 3 (the default and recommended setting) bolds approximately 40% of each word. Level 5 bolds 60% or more. Experiment to find what feels most natural for your reading style.
What is the saccade interval setting?
Saccade refers to the rapid eye movements between fixation points. The saccade interval controls how often the bolding appears โ set to 1 to bold every word, set to 2 to bold every other word, set to 3 for every third word. Higher intervals create a lighter, more spaced out effect.
What output formats are available?
The tool exports in three formats. HTML preserves the bold formatting using <b> tags and inline styles โ paste into any HTML editor or email. Markdown uses **bold** syntax โ paste into Notion, Obsidian or any Markdown editor. Plain text uses UPPERCASE for the fixation letters.
Is the Dyslexia Friendly font option helpful?
Comic Sans MS, which is used for the dyslexia-friendly setting, is actually recommended by some dyslexia specialists because the irregular letterforms make each character more distinct and harder to mirror or flip visually. It is not a clinical treatment but many readers with dyslexia prefer it.
Can I use the HTML output in my own website or app?
Yes. The HTML output uses inline styles and standard <b> and <span> tags. It will work in any HTML context โ email templates, web pages, React components or any CMS. Copy the HTML output and paste it wherever you need it.
